Originally "coaching" was a term that was associated with sports: the coach was a person who would help an individual or team to hone and improve their game, whether it was tennis, soccer, rugby, golf or any other sport. Nowadays "Coaching" is a term that describes the cognitive technology and tools that is used to unleash human potential in any aspect of the human experience, whether it's business, leadership, personal life or sports. Top performers in a great range of fields employ coaches – CEO's entrepreneurs, psychologists, business owners, managers, mothers… the list includes everyone who asks "How can I make things even better?" This involves a "generative" approach to human functioning: to generate new levels of competence, success and well-being, rather than a remedial approach which attempts to fix problems – and herein lays the difference between "coaching" and "therapy".
