Mompreneur Project

How do you stay balanced  and sane if you are a Mom AND you run your own business, i.e. if you’re a “Mompreneur”?
Rooirose and Standard Bank launched a competition for Mompreneurs, and organised a breakfast for them in August 2009.  A speaking engagement on this occasion led to an informal research project in which I interviewed four Mompreneurs, as well as some of their children.

Read the interviews here…

Jill Hamlyn, CEO of  The People Business Group and mother of  Kirsten,Travis and Braden.
Jill started her business 21 years ago when Kirsten was 2 and Travis was just born.  She grew an award-winning business over the years, and her children have turned out to be charming, independent and ambitious young adults.

Travis Hamlyn, Jill’s middle child
Travis is now 21 years old and in his 2nd year of studying B.Comm Economics.  He already runs a business on the side and believes it’s a good idea to make a head start in one’s career before starting a family.

Braden Hamlyn, Jill’s youngest child
Braden is now 19 years old in his 1st year of studying B.Sc Construction Management.  He stands for building a strong relationship with one’s children while they are small.

Cheryl Lucas, CEO of People SA Coaching and mother of Jerome and Carey
Cheryl started her Health Food Store and Nutritional Consulting business in 1996/7.  Responding to a need to manage her ever-growing downline, she started training in PNI (psycho-neuro-immunology) and in NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming).  This led to a career transition - she set up her coaching and training company in 2006.  Both her children are now part of this business.

Carey Jooste, Cheryl’s daughter
Carey is 28 years old, has been building her coaching and coaching training business over the past 4 years and now stands on the brink of starting a family.

Taryn Sydow, CEO of Optimal Coaching and mother of Brendan and Kirsten
After a corporate career of 17 years , Taryn (now 35 years old) started a coaching and leadership development business 2 years ago and already co-authored a book, “Putting the Pebbles in First”.

Brendan and Kirsten Sydow share their in-the-moment experience of having a corporate mom vs. a mom who is happily working from home.
