Success-Many Times in a Few Minutes

There is a popular misconception that you meditate successfully only if you maintain perfect concentration on your point of focus, or if you manage to make the mind go and stay completely blank.

Here is a different approach:

  1. Meditation is about taking your mind off your normal day-to-day thoughts so that you can have a break and rest.
  2. Forcing the mind to go blank is very hard if you have a very busy mind.
  3. It's OK to make it as easy as possible for yourself.
  4. The Meditation Cycle involves 4 steps:

  1. The secret lies in having a "chosen point of focus*" BEFORE you start your meditation session.
  2. The success of your session lies in noticing when your mind is elsewhere – i.e. NOT on your "chosen point of focus", and as soon as you've realised it, to bring your attention back to your point of focus.
  3. It is important to accept your mind as a natural wanderer.  To have the expectation that your mind "should" be dead stable, only sets you up for frustration and a sense of failure.
  4. As long as you have a point of focus and remember to bring your attention back to it whenever you caught yourself thinking other thoughts, you are in the loop.  You are "successful" every time you return to your point of focus!

*Point of Focus:
Here are some examples of things you can use as a point of focus:

  • Your breath
  • Sound:  The sounds in your environment, the sound of your breathing, music, a spoken mantra, a certain note / tone
  • Visual image:  a flower, candle, crystal, picture, nature scene
  • Your own heartbeat
  • An idea / silent word

PITFALL PREVENTION

~Ideally, have only point of focus per session.  If you have different points of focus, you could be distracted by wondering what you're
supposed to focus on.

~Choose your point of focus BEFORE you start your session, otherwise you could end up spending half the practice time wondering what to focus on.

~Stick with a point of focus for a period of time – at least for some weeks, preferably even for some months.  Your mind becomes used to the discipline – has nothing to argue or negotiate about, and settles down more easily.
